22Sakushima Island
On an isolated island, time seems to flow a lot slower than usual. A calm beach and many different coastlines. A valley filled with different flowers throughout each and every season. The scenery of a settlement with black-wall houses lined up. Located 20 minutes by boat from Isshiki Port, directly in the center of Mikawa Bay, you will find Sakushima Island with its nostalgic, warm, and yet somehow also new atmosphere, an amazing scene will expand before your very eyes.
While there are many beautiful and interesting things to see and do on Sakushima Island, which has no traffic lights nor convenience stores, the most famous thing on the island is the art exhibitions you will find upon arriving. One of the main art pieces that represents the island as a whole is the “Ohirune House” which translates to “The Nap House”. It has a black box which has taken the look of the black-bricked houses of the settlement, from which you can hear the sea’s waves, as well as feel the salty sea air on your face, if you close your eyes you truly become one with nature. There is also what’s known as the “Seagull Parking Lot” where an endless amount of seagulls can be seen flying above the water who let you know the direction the wind is blowing, there are many art pieces here that will surely allow you the full satisfaction for everything the island has to offer.
