
15Sakaori Terraced Rice Fields
A Terraced Rice Field refers to various water-filled horizontal paddies that are built at different levels on a slope. Sakaori Terraced Rice Fields, selected as one of Japan’s top 100 terraced rice fields, is found in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, surrounded by both Mt. Kasagi and Mt. Gongen, and has over 400 years of history. It is a beautiful rural landscape made from stone, effort, and the knowledge of local predecessors, truely a natural Japanese valley.
This area has a lot of variation in temperature throughout the year causing above-average precipitation, making it perfect for growing rice, and delicious rice is being made to this day within the Sakaori Terraced Rice Fields.
At Sakaori Terraced Rice Fields, you are able to take a walk around the area with an English guide, and, depending on the season, there are various different interesting activities that have been prepared such as rice planting or rice reaping.
