24Toyohashi’s Tezutsu hand-held Fireworks
Toyohashi, Aichi, is the birthplace of the Tezutsu hand-held Fireworks that have been lived by locals for over 450 years.
A huge pillar of flames is fired from the bamboo tube shooting over 10m high, with the final large explosion at the end known in Japanese as the “hane”. It is traditional for the person holding this firework to create the firework and put the gunfire into the firework themselves.
You can see these amazing firework displays at different places across Toyohashi such as within various shrines, and other event locations. Every year during September, there is the “Honoo-no-Saiten” or “Fair of Fire” in English where 20 people let off these fireworks all at the same time, you can also see the fireworks during November and March with a beautiful castle background. This is the only place in Japan where you can see these fireworks being let off with a castle in the background.
