Arimatsu Narumi Shibori Tie-Dyeing is recognized as a traditional craft in Japan, and Arimatsu is known as the most popular location for this type of tie-dyeing worldwide. If you explore around Tokaido and the town of Arimatsu, you’re sure to come into contact with various different traditional and modern applications of this tie-dying method.
At the Arimatsu Narumi Shibori Tie-Dyeing Museum you can see various exhibitions as well as purchase certain items, you can also learn all about this tie-dyeing method. You can even watch the skilled craftsmen and women perform this tie-dyeing method in the flesh. There are also a lot of activities you can do here such as tie-dyeing your own handkerchief or scarf.
The townscape of Arimatsu spans 800m of Tokaido, and is a location that has been painted onto a Edo-period woodblock print, it looks the same to this day.
