
16Gifu Prefecture’s Local Sweets
In Gifu prefecture, there is lots of local confectionery that are made by using the blessings of nature to their fullest. There are some spots that actually offer confectionary making experiences, so please enjoy the traditional Japanese confectionery culture when you visit.
● Kuri-kinton
A local confectionery made with chestnuts, which is said to have originated in the Tono region in the eastern area of Gifu. Boiled chestnuts are ground, strained, mixed with a small amount of sugar and cooked. It is a simple dessert where you can taste the original sweetness of the chestnuts.
● Mizu Manju
Ogaki, Gifu, also known as the "city of water" with its abundant groundwater. "Mizu Manju" is made using this famous water. It is a fresh dessert made by rolling mochi in kudzu powder and chilling it in the fridge, it is a famous summer dessert with a unique smooth texture.
● Tochi Mochi
A local dessert made by mixing glutinous rice with horse chestnuts in the Hida region in the northern area of Gifu. It can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, such as baking it with soy sauce and miso, or adding it to Zenzai (Japanese dessert soup made with Azuki beans).
