Mino Ware refers to the pottery made in Gifu Prefecture’s eastern districts; Tajimi, Toki, Mizunami, and Kani. Even to this day, these cities produce over 50% of Japan’s porcelain and pottery, and are known as some of the most famous pottery-making locations nationwide.
It is thought that Mino Ware started being manufactured in the 7th century, meaning to this day, it would hold over 1,300 years of history.
Up until the first world war, European pottery was the most well known, however, after the war it became hard for countries within Europe to produce pottery, and as such, Japan began making its own. During tha
t time, Mino Ware was already being created in the eastern parts of Gifu Prefecture, but this became a stepping stone to them making more and more.
