5Gujo Odori
”Gujo Odori” is Japan’s longest and one of its most famous obon dance festivals that takes place in Gujō from the middle of July all the way to the start of September spanning 33 nights of continuous dance. Every single year, over 300,000 people from across Japan gather, wearing yukatas and Japanese wooden clogs, form a ring with the locals and have fun doing this traditional dance all night long.
During the 4-day period of 8/13 to 8/16 something called “Tetsuya Odori” takes place, this is an event where people dance through the night for these 4 days. Within Gujo Odori there are 10 different types of dances that all have different movements and tempos meaning you’ll never get bored. There are also opportunities to experience Gujo Odori, one of Japan’s important intangible folk culture assets, outside of the event period.
