4Woodcraft in Hida

Woodwork engineers have been active for many years in the Hida area in the northern section of Gifu prefecture, which is blessed with abundant forests. The traditional technique, "Hida woodworking", has been passed down through generations.

● Shunkei Lacquerware
"Shunkei Lacquerware" is lacquerware made by a craftsman who works with wood and a craftsman who applies lacquer, and this craft boasts a history of over 400 years. In contrast to regular lacquerware, which is coated with multiple layers of lacquer, "Shunkei lacquerware" shows off the beauty of the materials used to make it, so its biggest feature is the minimalistic lacquer processing.

● Ichii Carving
"Ichii Ittobori" is made by craftsmen carving the Ichii (Japanese Yew) tree, which is a variety of tree found in the Gifu prefecture. It it’s characterized by a method that makes use of the original colour of the Yew tree and the beauty of the wood grain without adding colour, so you the change in the wood grain and colour complexion that changes over the years can be enjoyed.
