2Wine Cellar / Japanese Sake Tasting Experience
”Sake” is an alcoholic beverage typically made up of 3 main ingredients being rice, kōji, and water. It is one of Japan’s most popular food cultures that has been used from long ago as a gift for gods, a marriage ritual, and as presents for others.
In the northern part of Gifu Prefecture you will find the Hida District, which as a mountain range 3,000m long, while in the southern part of the prefecture you can find the Mino District which has the Kiso Three Rivers running through it, it’s because of this that it has an abundance in both rice and water, allowing it to be Japan’s leading sake location.
Within “Sake” there are various types, there is “Kaorushu” which has a strong smell, “Jukushu” which has been matured over a long period of time, “Sawashu” which is light and easy to drink, and finally “Atsushishu” which has a very strong flavor, each with their own unique taste that you can enjoy.
Here in Gifu Prefecture, you can visit the sake brewing distillery, look at how they make their delicious alcoholic beverages whilst listening to explanations about the process and such, and then even try the beverages from one of their many wine cellars. This is an experience that not only allows you to see and learn about Japan’s nature, but one of Japan’s leading food cultures.
